Our Love Story in Seven Scenes

Our Love Story in Seven Scenes

Today I was digging through some boxes, trying to declutter as much as possible before our big move, when I came across a tiny watercolor notepad from 2010. Inside are a series of vignettes chronicling the beginning of David and I’s relationship. At the time I made the paintings, I was preparing for a big move to California from Texas. I’d signed a one year commitment as a full-time volunteer working in development for a small school in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco. I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but two months before I was set to leave I met David. We had a whirlwind romance for two months that summer and then spent the following year dealing with the struggles that come with living a long distance apart.

Here is our story ~

David and I met through mutual friends at a Starbucks. He was 21 years old, with long black hair, barefoot. I was 22 years old and fresh out of college. I drank tea and he hated coffee. It was love at first sight.

Two weeks after meeting, we considered ourselves to be in a serious relationship. We spent most of that summer outside, despite the 100+ degree weather. One day we went to a friend’s ranch that had river access and spent the whole day floating in the water side by side.

David was working on his BFA and took me to his studio on campus. The gray blob between us is supposed to be clay. He was showing me how to coil build a pot, but I ended up making an owl statue instead.

2 AM outside my friend’s house – I was living with her that summer – holding each other underneath the trees. I was leaving for San Francisco soon and we didn’t know what would happen to our budding relationship.

The day I left for California. Later that night, talking on the phone, David described what it was like watching me leave. I remembered looking out the window, excited for my new adventure, but also heartsick for this man I barely knew.
